Becky, Brigitte, Robbie, Joy and Jodie joined me at the Alltell Ice Den in Scottsdale, AZ to catch JJ and Chadders in action over Thanksgiving.

"Put it on YouTube"

I seriously think the whole town of Park City shuts down when East takes the 20 minute drive up Parley's to beat the crap out of there PC Miners hockey team. Lucky for them, East did not disappoint winning the game by a final score of 7-2.

The first period was a little scary. Park City came out strong with 2 goals from a big kid wearing a generic jersey. The kid seemed like he could be a real threat but then East turned on the heat and the big kid got mouthy and dirty. Someone from Park City should have told the new kid, that when you trash talk JJ, he will answer by putting the puck behind your goalie.

In one of the best games I have ever seen JJ play in, JJ took control and really showed the big kid how East High gets things done. With 4 goals and 2 assists for a total of 6 points, JJ continued his dominating scoring streak and East's record grew to an impressive 8-2-1.

Here's an article that appeared in the Park Record a few days after the game.

Bested by East Miners fall to bitter rivals 7-2 Wednesday night
Adia Waldburger, of the Record staff Posted: 11/21/2008 04:43:34 PM MST

For the first period of play on Wednesday night at the Park City Ice Arena, the Park City Miners' hockey club had their biggest rival, East High, on the ropes. Scoring at the beginning and end of the period on goals from newcomer Colby Vaughan, the Miners led the Leopards 2-1 until the start of the second period when East, one of the top-ranked teams in the state, tied it up and scored five more goals after that to win 7-2.

The addition of Vaughan seems to have been an act of the hockey gods for Park City. The junior-level player from Frederick, Md., just moved into the area and brought his East Coast brand of hockey with him. Not only was he an offensive and defensive juggernaut in his first game for Park City, but he also stands above six feet and should be a force to be reckoned with as the season moves on.

Vaughan quickly learned about the Park City-East rivalry and did his best to help his team make a stand against the Leopards. East has always been a nemesis for the Miners, but after last year the matchup has become a bit of a war. Park City had a senior-heavy, talent-laden team last year, and it was East that knocked the Miners out of a legitimate shot at the title in the playoffs. Ever since then, Wednesday's game has been circled in red on the calendar for Park City. On Wednesday, the Miners came out hard, but started to scramble in the last two period as the fast-skating, quick-thinking Leopards made six goals.

East boasts four players who play on club travel teams, which means they are some of the best in the state. "When you are dealing with four kids that travel, they just couldn't respond," Park City head coach Bruce Foster said. Still, according to Foster, this had less to do with exhaustion as with just getting things figured out. "It wasn't so much that they were tired," he said. "In the first two periods, we were playing more disciplined hockey. In the third, we just started focusing more on chasing the puck." Mid-season, the Miners are still trying to figure out that right combination.

With Gray Robbins back from injury and the addition of Vaughan, Foster now has enough manpower for three strong lines but needs to figure out who plays best together. He said that once he figures that out, the number in the win column should quickly rise. Park City was also without the help of Robert Repko, a game-changing player from last year's squad whose height and scoring abilities make a big difference on the team. Repko was suspended for one game after an infraction in the Fremont game in early November.

Foster felt that the Miners skated with the Leopards for much of the game, but he would like to see many more shots on goal. East made a whopping 41 shots in the game compared a paltry 10 by the Miners. "They outshot us quite a bit," Foster said. Both teams committed their fair share of penalties with the Leopards' Nic Hadley and Park City's Vaughan committing the bulk of them. Vaughan said he is still adjusting to the West Coast style of hockey and is used to a more aggressive style of defense. "It's a learning experience," Vaughan said. "I get so caught up in the game, it's hard to bring it down."

Foster is anxiously waiting to see what else Vaughan will add to the team. Vaughan has already talked about leading the Miners in strategy drills and increasing their determination to win. But for right now, the Miners was pretty frustrated to lose to East on their home ice. "It's a big loss. It's no question," Foster said. "We just need to look forward and build on that." But, Foster is still excited to see where the season will go from here. "A lot of good things came out of this," he said. "We played them tough and next time we will have Repko back. The kids skated hard and left their heart out on the ice."

East Annihilates Northridge and a Baby is Born!

7 points from Ziegler helps East extend unbeaten streak to 7 and a 7lb baby is born.

Riding on a 6 game unbeaten streak, East High hosted the Northridge Knights on Monday, November 17th. After scoring 3 goals and adding 1 assist against Murray, JJ was definitely back in the scoring groove. Too bad for Northridge! Thru the 1st period of play, Northridge held their own. By the end of the 1st, East was up by a goal 3-2. The 2nd period was all East. Tallying 7 goals in the second period, East pulled away and never looked back. With a 10-3 lead heading into the 3rd period, East got comfortable. Northridge threatened with 3 goals but couldn't catch red hot East and red hot JJ. With 4 goals and 3 assists, JJ's 7 points helped East extend their unbeaten streak to 7. Final score East, 13 and Northridge ,6.

Driving home from the game, JJ's cousin Casie called. She was in labor and headed to the hospital! At 1:31am, Tuesday, November 18th, four hours after the game ended, Janessa Marie Shapiro was born. At 7lbs 1 oz, 19 inches long, and a head full of black hair she was perfect!

East Pummels Murray 9-3

Ziegler nets a hatrick. Potvien adds four more.

The East High Leopards took a commanding 4-0 first period lead over the Murray Spartans and never looked back. With a final score of 9-3, East improved to 6-2-1 on the season and is unbeaten in their last 6 games. In addition to powerhouse goal scorers, Ziegler and Potvien, Michael McCombs also picked up a pair of goals. Opposing teams beware: East has fire power!

Next week Northridge comes to Salt Lake for a game at Steiner and East travels to Park City to take on the Miners. Should be a great rematch of last season's playoff action.

East Defeats Davis With Goal in Last Two Seconds

JJ Ziegler sets up winning goal. Mark Potivien scores 6.

The last time East played Davis was during the 2008 playoffs last spring. East easily beat Davis to move on in the playoffs. Unfortuantely what I remember most about that game, is witnessing one high school kid get his check fractured by another. This happened IN THE STANDS after the game, not on the ice! It was disturbing to say the least. It was two Davis High fans. They didn't even realize they were both rooting for the same team. Crazy! Needless to say, I as hoping for a much less dramatic game this time!

No one ended up with broken bones, but the game was certainly filled with drama. East started the game strong with an early goal but soon found themselves down 3-1. By the end of the 2nd period the teams were deadlocked at 3 goals each. In a game plagued by penalities, it seemed like East couldn't ever get into a rhythm. Down by a goal with 5:40 left in the game, Mark exited the penalty box, took a pass from his brother Jay and scored tying the game 5-5. With 10 seconds left in the game, Davis called a time out. Following the time out. The teams got ready for what would be the last play of the game. Deep in the East zone, JJ was set to take the face off. He motioned to Mark. We knew what was coming. The puck droped, JJ won the face off and fed a perfect pass to Mark who has already advanced along to boards. With Davis in a panic, Mark took off. He deked and scored his 6th goal of the game and the game winner. Perfect set up, perfect execution and a perfect ending.

Chadders Home Weekend Huge Success

Chadders AAA U 18 hosted a round-robin tournament October 10-12th at the Salt Lake City Sports complex. Its rare Chadders plays at home and the team did not disappoint the family and friends who came out to support the team.

Chadders opened the tournament on Friday 10/10 against the Okanagan Hockey Academy. Being from Canada, OHA had predicted they would easily defeat Chadders. Chadders controlled the game and held on for a 3-1 win. Great game to watch.

On Saturday 10/11 Chadders played two games. The first game was against the highly ranked Nevada Stars. The Nevada Stars roster included a familar faces including Coach Pokey Reddick. Reddick has long history against teams from Utah. As a minor league goalie, Reddick visited Utah in the 80s and 90s playing for various Salt Lake Golden Eagles opponents. Its always fun to see someone from my hockey past still in the game. The game was a nerve racking back and forth, they score, we score, they score again type of game. After 11 goals in the first two periods, the third period was a defensive scoreless battle. Chadders managed an impressive 6-5 victory against the higher ranked Stars.

Chadders was 2-0 in the tournament heading into their second game of the day verus the Dallas Penquins. The cocky Penquins came into the game believing they were the better team and would easily win. Chadders dominated the game scoring three goals in the first period and three in the second. Dallas managed three goals but they fell short. Chadders were once again victorius - undefeated on the weekend.

The Championship Game was played on Sunday 10/11. The Dallas Penquins got there chance for revenge. In a penalty filled game (although most penalties were not penalties in my opinion- ridiculous referee), the Dallas Penquins managed to eek out 2-1 win.

Chadders went 3-1 for the weekend and achieved a higher national ranking as a result. Excellent hockey and so fun to watch. Thanks to everyone who came out to see JJ play. Its always more fun when I have friends and family to share the experience with.

JJ's fan club for the weekend inlcuded: Gary, Ruby, Casie, Ty,
Denise, Mike, Alli, Travis, Brian, Nicole, Tara (1st JJ hockey game ever!) , Diego(1st hockey game ever!), Coby, Tara's dad Ted, Debbie (1st hockey game ever!), Freida and her Grandson, and the Johnsons.

East 7, Cache Valley Independent 4

East started the 2008-09 season off with a victory. Yay! Thanks to Alli, Mike and Trav for coming out to the game.

Here's a summary of the game. Written by Jack Brittain plus a few photos. Thanks for the photos Jack!

Cache Valley Wild versus East High Leopards
September 8, 2008

By JACK BRITTAIN
A hard hitting game against a Cache Valley team that came to play and stayed in the game until the very end. East jumped to an early 1-0 lead, but Cache Valley came back to tie the game in the first period. East answered immediately to go up 2-1. A very physical first period ended 2-1, and it remained 2-1 throughout most of the second period as the two defenses dominated (East only allowed 4 shots on goal in the second period). Cache Valley tied the score 2-2 with 1:49 left in the second period, but East scored off the faceoff to go ahead 3-2 and then scored again with 22 seconds left in the period to end the second period ahead 4-2. East went ahead 5-2 in the third period, but Cache Valley battled back with two scores within 30 seconds in the middle of the third period to make the score 5-4. The teams were in a defensive deadlock the remainder of the third period until East scored with 22 seconds left in the game and then again with 14 seconds left to make the final score 7-4.

Cache Valley is an independent team, which means they draw players from several different high schools (East is a school-affiliated team, which means all the players come from one high school). They are one of the better independent teams in the state, and the team is largely the same as the Cache Valley Wild travel team, which is a tournament team. East is a talented team as well with several travel and travel-caliber players and matched up well with the Wild. This was an excellent opening game that tested East's lines and gave everyone a chance to see how prepared East is for the regular season. The only negative in the game is Alex Brittain is out with a torn MCL, which is a knee injury. No surgery, but 6 weeks to heal and rehabilitate his knee.

The Cost of Raising A Hockey Player

A recent issue of The Hockey News featured an article about NHL sophomore, Patrick Kane and how much time and money his parents invested in his hockey career. The Kane's estimate they've spent almost $144,000 from the time he started playing hockey until he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks last summer. Great article and it got me thinking.

I decided to try and figure out how much it has cost to get JJ to this point in his hockey career as well. JJ started playing hockey during the Summer of 1996 at age 5. He started traveling in the Fall of 2000. I only included team dues, equipment, travel costs, camp fees, and medical costs (broken finger, broken collarbone). All right, you ready for this? From 1996-97 thru last season 2007-2008 we are at about $65,000. Wow. If it takes a village to raise a child, then it must take an entire planet to raise a hockey player. JJ has certainly not gotten this far on his own. He has been fortunate to have 100s of people involved with his rearing. He is definitely the luckiest kid in the village and just maybe the luckiest kid on the planet.

RESULTS! San Jose Jr. Sharks Tournament

Submitted by JJ ZIEGLER

Chadders hockey finally started labor day weekend. We had four practices til our first tournament in San Jose. We left for San Jose friday August 29th at 10pm. Our team rode the bus to San Jose. It was a pretty quick drive down there because we left pretty late so everyone just slept the whole way. When we arrived in San Jose we went straight to the rink to play our first game.

Our first game was against the San Jose Jr. Sharks. The game was really close. We were down 4-3 after the second period. The Jr. Sharks scored a quick one in the 3rd to make it 5-3. We pulled our goalie late in the third and they scored on the empty net making the final score 6-3. After the game we went to the hotel, checked in and I took a quick nap because we had another game at 8:15pm. I roomed with Josh Harris, Hampus (Swedish Goalie), and Donny Harris. It was a very relaxed room.

Our next game was against the San Diego Gulls. Our team started out horribly. The Gulls scored two quick goals in the first period making it 2-0. Alex Halloran answered right back to make it 2-1. The Gulls then rushed the puck right off the face off and made it 3-1. We struggled through the period and managed to tie it up before the period ended. We came to play in the second and scored three more goals by the end of the period. San Diego only scored one which made the score 6-4 by the end of the second. Not much happened in the third both teams each got a goal giving us the win 7-5. I got the sixth goal of the game.

The next game we played the California Wave. We started this game out even worse then before. At the end of the first it was 3-1 Wave. We stepped it up in the second and made the score 4-3 Wave. We finally started playing our game in the third but the Wave held us off and got an empty net goal making the final score 5-3. So we now had two losses with one win. Things we looking ok, but we had to kill the next team in order for us to have a shot at the championship.

That night we played the Houston Wild. We absolutley killed them. Mikko Akais from Finaland got four goals, I got one goal, henry had two, Halloran had one, and Gustav had one. We won the game 9-0. We had enough points in this game to make the championship.

We got our rematch with the Jr. Sharks. The game was very close. By the end of the second period the score was 3-2 Sharks. We fought hard, but luck was just not with us and we ended up loosing 4-3.

All in all it was a very good tournament. Everyone bonded good and we learned what we need to work on for future tournaments.

Why does JJ wear #11? Well, a few reasons. The number 11 kind of looks like his name, JJ. Pretty cool, eh? The greatest leader in all of hockey (possibly in ALL sports) Mark Messier wore #11. And finally, the real story. JJ's cousin Casie loved Jim Dowd. Jim Dowd played for the New Jersey Devils back in the 90's. His number was #11. Casie loved him so JJ picked his number.

East vs. Brighton - July 27, 2008

In the last regular season game of the 2008 High School Summer League, East easily defeated Brighton by a score of 6-1. Special thanks to Mike and Alli for coming to see the game. Below are a few photos from the game (courtesy of Jack Brittain, THANKS, Jack!). Notice the sequence of the pictures. Kinda cool. JJ is in black. Number 11.

East vs. South Valley Independent

JJ is home! Yay! East High is in the summer hockey league playoff hunt and had a game vs. South Valley Independent on Wednesday night. A quick note about independent teams - If you want to play hockey and you attend a high schoool doesn't have a hockey team then you have to play for the independent team in your region.

East High handled South Valley Independent with ease. Final score 9-1 East. JJ had a couple of goals which always makes me happy. Definitely the highlight of the game and quite possibly of the summer was Hayden scoring his FIRST goal! What makes this special is Hayden is a former football player. He played football his entire life until an injury forced him out. As a sophomore, Hayden decided to give hockey a try. Never played hockey, never skated before. Hayden is a riot. He is always in the right place and has had many chances but this time the puck went right in. Congrats Hayden!

Drop-In Hockey.. in Connecticut

JJ is visiting his dad in Connecticut right now. We paid Delta Airlines an extra $105 in excess baggage fees so JJ could take his hockey gear with him. Absoultely worth it! Today JJ played some drop-in hockey with Nick Bonino - Boston Univeristy student and San Jose Sharks 2007 draftee. Gotta love a good mentor!

A few links with information about Nick:

Go Fly A Kite

Even hockey players need a vacation. Here's JJ flying a kite on a beach in Maine.

Jagr History Lesson

For many reasons, Jaromir Jagr holds a special place in the hockey hearts of the Stewart/Ziegler family. First of all, he is Ruby's (JJ's grandmother) favorite player. If Ruby loves him, who is to argue? Hockey hair and all she has loved him from the start. Second, his incessant whining in his early years in the NHL helped coin the phrase "Jagr-ing". Most parents tell there kids to "Stop whining" or "Stop being a baby" or "Behave". In our house, it was "Stop Jagr-ing". Finally, I discovered Jagr and I actually had something in common. We both like to gamble at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

During the annual Girls Trip to Vegas in the Spring of 2003, Becky and I were watching the Ducks beat the Stars in the sportsbook at the MGM Grand. Brigitte and Shay were gambling away on there favorite slot machines. Not feeling lucky at her current machine, Brigitte decided to take a walk and find a new one. Much to her surprise she ended up walking right behind Jaromir Jagr. Being the sly girl she is, she let him pass her. Then, of course, she followed him. He ended up in the high rollers lounge. Being the kick ass friend she is, she RAN (yes Brigitte RAN) to the sportsbook to tell me the jackpot she had scored. The mission was simple. We had to get an autograph for Ruby. Hello this was Ruby's FAVORITE player! So armed with a pen I headed into the high rollers lounge where I found good 'ol #68 munching at the buffet. Five minutes later I had not one but TWO autographs - "Ruby - Best wishes, Jaromir Jagr #68" and "To JJ - Best wishes, Jaromir Jagr #68". MGM Grand cocktail napkins are good for more than just cocktails. Jagr was funny when I asked for the second autograph for my JJ. He asked me "What is his name?" I replied, "JJ". He said "J J just like me!" I responded, "Yes, just like you. Or course!" With the goods in hand, I ran out of the high rollers lounge and immediately called Ruby. It was welll past midnight in Salt Lake City but this couldn't wait until morning. I told her about the autograph as I tears rolled down my face. I know I am a total dork. But hey, if you know Ruby, you know she deserves the world.

Check out JJ's autograph!!

Jagr no longer a Ranger. Now he's a Russian? Huh?

How does a guy from the Czech Republic become a Russian? Okay he's not actually becoming a Russian citizen. Jaromir Jagr announced on July 3rd that he is leaving the NHL to play in Russia. It was known that the Rangers had decided not to renew his contract. However, JJ and I had both hoped he would end up with the Penquins. How awesome would that be? It would appear that Jagr's ego was too big to stay in the NHL. Or maybe living in New York for 3 years, he ended up with a big wallet he needed to fill? Truth is although, he was offered more money in US dollars to play in the NHL, the money he will earn in Russia will be tax free. There is no way the NHL could pay him what the Russian team can. All right, all right I'll stop Jagr-ing. I'll miss him.

Dog Days of Summer

July is the worst month for hockey fans. The NHL draft was last month, pre-season camps aren't until LATE August or September. Not much going on. So what keeps you going? Well three things - tryouts, trades and summer hockey leagues.

Tryouts - Early this year! This is good thing actually. Gives me two more months to raise money to pay for all of this hockey-ness.

Trades - So far this summer Hossa going to the Red Wings is the one that has really caught my attention. I would just love to see the Penquins continue to build on their successes from last season. The salary cap makes it tough to do. So good for Hossa. Oh and Sean Avery a Dallas Star? Booooooo! Avery helped the Rangers make headlines. I wonder if Brett Hull and the state of Texas can break him. I hope not.

Summer League - Nothing feels better than going into a freezing cold rink on a 100 degree July day. Don't forget a blanket though. JJ is playing on THREE teams this summer. Yup, three. East High Hockey, Tavernacle Men's League and a Men's League team with Sly (one of JJ's former coaches - now coaches the U of U team). Playing for three teams keeps him on the ice but not necessiarily out of trouble.

"I made the team."

Recently, JJ tried out for and made the U18 AAA Chadders Hockey team for the 2008-09 season. Way to go, JJ!
