East Annihilates Northridge and a Baby is Born!

7 points from Ziegler helps East extend unbeaten streak to 7 and a 7lb baby is born.

Riding on a 6 game unbeaten streak, East High hosted the Northridge Knights on Monday, November 17th. After scoring 3 goals and adding 1 assist against Murray, JJ was definitely back in the scoring groove. Too bad for Northridge! Thru the 1st period of play, Northridge held their own. By the end of the 1st, East was up by a goal 3-2. The 2nd period was all East. Tallying 7 goals in the second period, East pulled away and never looked back. With a 10-3 lead heading into the 3rd period, East got comfortable. Northridge threatened with 3 goals but couldn't catch red hot East and red hot JJ. With 4 goals and 3 assists, JJ's 7 points helped East extend their unbeaten streak to 7. Final score East, 13 and Northridge ,6.

Driving home from the game, JJ's cousin Casie called. She was in labor and headed to the hospital! At 1:31am, Tuesday, November 18th, four hours after the game ended, Janessa Marie Shapiro was born. At 7lbs 1 oz, 19 inches long, and a head full of black hair she was perfect!

East Pummels Murray 9-3

Ziegler nets a hatrick. Potvien adds four more.

The East High Leopards took a commanding 4-0 first period lead over the Murray Spartans and never looked back. With a final score of 9-3, East improved to 6-2-1 on the season and is unbeaten in their last 6 games. In addition to powerhouse goal scorers, Ziegler and Potvien, Michael McCombs also picked up a pair of goals. Opposing teams beware: East has fire power!

Next week Northridge comes to Salt Lake for a game at Steiner and East travels to Park City to take on the Miners. Should be a great rematch of last season's playoff action.

East Defeats Davis With Goal in Last Two Seconds

JJ Ziegler sets up winning goal. Mark Potivien scores 6.

The last time East played Davis was during the 2008 playoffs last spring. East easily beat Davis to move on in the playoffs. Unfortuantely what I remember most about that game, is witnessing one high school kid get his check fractured by another. This happened IN THE STANDS after the game, not on the ice! It was disturbing to say the least. It was two Davis High fans. They didn't even realize they were both rooting for the same team. Crazy! Needless to say, I as hoping for a much less dramatic game this time!

No one ended up with broken bones, but the game was certainly filled with drama. East started the game strong with an early goal but soon found themselves down 3-1. By the end of the 2nd period the teams were deadlocked at 3 goals each. In a game plagued by penalities, it seemed like East couldn't ever get into a rhythm. Down by a goal with 5:40 left in the game, Mark exited the penalty box, took a pass from his brother Jay and scored tying the game 5-5. With 10 seconds left in the game, Davis called a time out. Following the time out. The teams got ready for what would be the last play of the game. Deep in the East zone, JJ was set to take the face off. He motioned to Mark. We knew what was coming. The puck droped, JJ won the face off and fed a perfect pass to Mark who has already advanced along to boards. With Davis in a panic, Mark took off. He deked and scored his 6th goal of the game and the game winner. Perfect set up, perfect execution and a perfect ending.

Chadders Home Weekend Huge Success

Chadders AAA U 18 hosted a round-robin tournament October 10-12th at the Salt Lake City Sports complex. Its rare Chadders plays at home and the team did not disappoint the family and friends who came out to support the team.

Chadders opened the tournament on Friday 10/10 against the Okanagan Hockey Academy. Being from Canada, OHA had predicted they would easily defeat Chadders. Chadders controlled the game and held on for a 3-1 win. Great game to watch.

On Saturday 10/11 Chadders played two games. The first game was against the highly ranked Nevada Stars. The Nevada Stars roster included a familar faces including Coach Pokey Reddick. Reddick has long history against teams from Utah. As a minor league goalie, Reddick visited Utah in the 80s and 90s playing for various Salt Lake Golden Eagles opponents. Its always fun to see someone from my hockey past still in the game. The game was a nerve racking back and forth, they score, we score, they score again type of game. After 11 goals in the first two periods, the third period was a defensive scoreless battle. Chadders managed an impressive 6-5 victory against the higher ranked Stars.

Chadders was 2-0 in the tournament heading into their second game of the day verus the Dallas Penquins. The cocky Penquins came into the game believing they were the better team and would easily win. Chadders dominated the game scoring three goals in the first period and three in the second. Dallas managed three goals but they fell short. Chadders were once again victorius - undefeated on the weekend.

The Championship Game was played on Sunday 10/11. The Dallas Penquins got there chance for revenge. In a penalty filled game (although most penalties were not penalties in my opinion- ridiculous referee), the Dallas Penquins managed to eek out 2-1 win.

Chadders went 3-1 for the weekend and achieved a higher national ranking as a result. Excellent hockey and so fun to watch. Thanks to everyone who came out to see JJ play. Its always more fun when I have friends and family to share the experience with.

JJ's fan club for the weekend inlcuded: Gary, Ruby, Casie, Ty,
